چکیده

We present measurements of growth rates of the (0001) facet surface of ice as a function of water vapor supersaturation over the temperature range −2 ≥ T ≥ −40 C. From these data we infer the temperature dependence of premelting on the basal surface and the effects of premelting on the ice growth dynamics. Over this entire temperature range the growth was consistent with a simple 2D nucleation model, allowing a measurement of the critical supersaturation σ0(T ) as a function of temperature. We find that the 2D nucleation barrier is substantially diminished when the premelted layer is partially developed, as indicated by a reduced σ0, while the barrier is higher both when the premelted layer is fully absent or fully developed.

Precision Measurements of Ice Crystal Growth Rates

I describe techniques for making precise measurements of the growth rates of the principal facets of ice crystals. Particular attention is paid to identifying and reducing systematic errors in the measurements, as these have plagued earlier attempts to determine ice growth rates. I describe the details of an experimental apparatus we are currently using, and I describe some preliminary results ...

Cylindrically symmetric Green's function approach for modeling the crystal growth morphology of ice.

We describe a front-tracking Green's function approach to modeling cylindrically symmetric crystal growth. This method is simple to implement, and with little computer power can adequately model a wide range of physical situations. We apply the method to modeling the hexagonal prism growth of ice crystals, which is governed primarily by diffusion along with anisotropic surface kinetic processes...

Crystal Growth in the Presence of Surface Melting: Novel Behavior of the Principal Facets of Ice

We present measurements of the growth rates of the principal facet surfaces of ice from water vapor as a function of supersaturation over the temperature range −2 ≥ T ≥ −40 C. Our data are well described by a dislocation-free layer-nucleationmodel, parameterized by the attachment coefficient as a function of supersaturation α(σ) = A exp(−σ0/σ). The measured parameters A(T ) and σ0(T ) for the b...

Ice surface reconstruction as antifreeze protein-induced morphological modification mechanism.

The crystal growth process by which fish antifreeze proteins (AFPs) and antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) modify the ice morphology is analyzed in the AFP-ice system. A newly identified AFP-induced surface reconstruction mechanism enables one-dimensional helical and irregular globular ice binding surfaces to stabilize secondary, kinetically less stable ice surfaces with variable face indices. No...

Measurements of Ice Crystal Growth Rates in Air at -5C and -10C

We present experiments investigating the growth of ice crystals from water vapor in air using a free-fall convection chamber. We measured growth rates at temperatures of -5 C and -10 C as a function of supersaturation at an air pressure near one bar. We compared our data with numerical models of diffusionlimited growth based on cellular automata to extract surface growth parameters at different...
